Abstract
PURPOSE
To understand the prevalence, causes, clinical course and effective treatment options of papilledema.
METHODS
This retrospective study was conducted on 89 patients with papilledema who presented to our Out Patient Department from January 2022 to July 2022. Data collected was analyzed and results were tabulated.
RESULTS
Papilledema was found to be more prevalent among females (56) than males and in the age group of 21-30 years (25). Common causes were Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (57), space occupying lesions (22) and Cerebral Venous Thrombosis (11). Majority of patients (64) required only medical management (Acetazolamide). Ventriculoperitoneal shunt was done in 5 patients and optic nerve sheath fenestration surgery in 4 patients.
CONCLUSION
Papilledema can be a serious sight-threatening condition if left untreated. Early detection and timely management can prevent permanent optic nerve damage and visual field defects- thus improving the quality of life of patients.
