Abstract
Aims: To determine the long-term changes in refraction following paediatric cataract surgery.
Methods: A retrospective review of children who had undergone cataract surgery with IOL implantation between 1st January 2018 and 31st January 2019 was conducted. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: 28 eyes of 23 children were eligible. The mean age was 9.74 ± 4.18 years with a male to female ratio of 15:8 and a mean follow-up (FU) of 561.5 ± 340.4 days. The mean logMAR visual acuity improved from 1.23 ± 0.73 to 0.42 ± 0.49 (p<0.001) post-op. There was a significant difference in the spherical equivalent (SEq) between the first and the final post-op visit (1.0 ± 1.4 D vs 0.2 ± 1.6 D; p=0.0021). The difference in SEq became significant from the first post-op visit only beyond 200 days post-surgery (p=0.0019). Conclusion: A long term FU is essential to combat the changing refractive status of the eye and achieve optimal outcomes following paediatric cataract surgery.
