Abstract
Aim: To determine the characteristics and visual outcome of patients with ocular trauma.
Method: This is a retrospective, hospital‑based case study conducted on patients with ocular injuries at a tertiary care hospital in Eastern India.
Results: 2010 eyes of 1940 patients were included in this study. Males were predominantly affected (69.7%). The commonest type of trauma was closed globe injury(74.2%). The visual outcome was poorer in open globe injury. Unlike previous studies in the past, most of the injuries were home based (56.7%) due to restrictions imposed by covid-19. 45.4% of injuries occurred in paediatric age group. 47.4% presented to the hospital within 24 hours and 5.8% of them presented as late as one week. Among these patients, 73.4% of them had regained vision (>=6/18) and 7.6% of the total became blind (less than 3/60).
Conclusion: Awareness among the masses and preventive measures may help in bringing down the incidence of ocular morbidity and blindness.
