Abstract
Purpose: To identify severity, visual outcome, prognostic indicators of penetrating ocular trauma.
Methods: 100 Patients were studied. Various factors like age, sex, occupation, mode of injury, zone of injury, vision at presentation, duration between trauma and surgery, type of management, visual outcomes and causes for visual disability were analysed.
Results: Males constituted the majority (74%),sticks and sharp metals were the commonest objects causing injury (52% and 24% respectively).68% patients presented with zone I injury,59% patents had involvement of anterior segment alone. Traumatic cataract was most common f/b IOFB in 16% and Endophthalmitis in 10% of the cases.39% patients had adequate visual outcome with visual acuity being better than 6/18 at 6 weeks.
Conclusion: Education, timely ophthalmic consultation is necessary. Poor prognostic factors were zone-III injury, involvement of posterior segment, presence of intraocular hemorrhage and endophthalmitis.
