Abstract

A 22-year-old male presented with diminished vision and pain in RE for 3 days with history of head injury. Best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was HM in RE and 6/6 in LE. Self-sealed corneal tear with iris entrapment and probable thorn-like foreign bodies in the anterior chamber and over the anterior capsule noted. Corneal tear repair and wound exploration done. Foreign bodies were removed via side port which to our surprise turned out to be eyelashes. Cornea was sutured and prophylactic intravitreal antibiotics injected. On post-op day 1,BCVA was CF at 1 metre with intact corneal sutures. B-scan showed hyperdense echoes suggestive of vitritis. Patient was started on topical antibiotics, steroids, cycloplegics and serial intravitreal antibiotic injections.3 months post-op, BCVA was 6/9 with healed corneal wound and clear vitreous. Meticulous examination with a high index of suspicion for any kind of foreign body and prompt treatment can be sight saving in cases of penetrating trauma.
